Adult Learners' Week
2009 will celebrate the eighteenth year of Adult Learners' Week, with events and activities taking place from 9th to 15th May 2009. NIACE, who co-ordinate the campaign, is hosting an Adult Learners' Week Roadshow to give local providers the chance to see what it is all about and to encourage wider participation and more partnership activity.
Adult Learners' Week has successfully engaged with hundreds of thousands of people over the last seventeen years. The Week has encouraged adults in all their diversity to give learning a go, whether for pleasure, to catch up on skills missed out at school or job progression. Since 1992 the campaign has provided the opportunity to highlight that learning is not only good for individual health, self-esteem and employability, but also that it transforms lives.

Taster Skills for Life session
Please find attached a flyer for a course which will be running at the Castle Museum from 13th October for 4 weeks. It is a taster session with embedded skills for life and is aimed at people with either no formal qualifications or very few qualifications. It is hoped that once the learners' have completed the session that they will feel more confident to possibly move onto further learning and/or training, which will be signposted at the end of the course.
Skills for Life Improvement Programme
The QIA Skills for Life Improvement Programme is a government funded programme that aims to help providers who want to improve learner success rates, to improve the practise of their tutors, and improve outcomes on their programs, by ensuring that literacy, language and numeracy is embedded throughout their learning experience. The Improvement Programme provides support and guidance by working with you on implementing a whole organisation approach to develop self-improvement in this vital part of an organisations development.
The service is free for education and training providers, but subject to certain qualification criteria.
Who is it for?
For 2008-09 the Improvement Programme will prioritise applications from
providers who are working with:
• Young people (18-24) and adults (25+) who are not in employment, education or training (NEET)
• Learners below Level 2 in literacy, language and numeracy. That’s anyone who has no previous qualifications or who have not obtained either Foundation GNVQ, 2 GCSE’s (A – D) or an equivalent qualification or
• are focusing on developing their capacity to deliver effective numeracy programmes.
Demand is likely to be high and there will be limits on the numbers of providers involved, so we would request that you apply early.
If you have any queries about the programme, I would be happy to help. My contact details are bmistry@cfbt.com or telephone 0118 902 1264.
